New findings from Sweepstakes Table have revealed the five most underrated beaches across Britain, highlighting hidden gems that remain free from crowds despite their breathtaking beauty. Among them, Ross Back Sands in Northumberland has been described as "one of the most quietly spectacular beaches in England."
Ross Back Sands: A Hidden Coastal Treasure
The North East beach, part of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, offers around three miles of untouched sand. To the south lies Bamburgh Castle, while Lindisfarne sits to the north. The nearest parking is a mile away, which helps keep crowds thin and seals plentiful. Visitors should note that seasonal restrictions apply between May and September to protect nesting seabirds, and no facilities are available on site.
Ross Back Sands has also earned recognition on TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice as one of the UK's best beaches.
Top Underrated Beach: Pedn Vounder, Cornwall
The ranking's top spot went to Pedn Vounder Beach in Cornwall, described as a perfect choice for those seeking an unspoilt yet magnificent beach. Tucked beneath the cliffs of Treryn Dinas on Cornwall's far western tip, the beach features near-white sand and turquoise water. At low tide, sandbars create shallow lagoon-like pools ideal for paddling.
Access requires a scramble along a steep cliff path; decent footwear is essential, and flip flops are not an option. The beach is tidal, so timing matters—arrive at low tide for hours of space, but at high tide the beach may disappear entirely. Parking is available at neighbouring Treen village, roughly a 10-minute stroll away, with no amenities on the beach itself.
