RHS Warns Gardeners to Check for Hedgehogs Before Strimming

Gardeners are being urged by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to perform a vital safety check before carrying out a common summer gardening task that poses a serious risk to hedgehogs. Despite recent cool and rainy weather, temperatures are set to reach 28°C in parts of the UK this weekend, prompting many to tidy up their gardens.

Hedgehogs at Risk from Strimmers

Hedgehogs, described by the RSPCA as a 'gardener's friend' and an important part of the ecosystem, are often injured or killed by strimmers and lawn mowers. The RHS advises: 'Always check the whole area carefully before strimming, and cut long grass with care. Strimmers are one of the biggest causes of fatal or severely injuring hedgehog accidents.'

Other Garden Hazards

Compost heaps also pose a danger, as hedgehogs often rest in them. Gardeners are advised to check compost before turning it over. Owners of robotic mowers should consult manufacturers about safety features to protect small mammals.

Benefits of Longer Grass

Letting grass grow longer supports hedgehogs and other wildlife, providing habitat for ground-nesting insects and retaining moisture. The RSPB recommends avoiding strimmers and delaying mowing until late summer to mimic traditional hay meadows.
