Renfrew Development Trust (RDT) has formally submitted a community asset transfer (CAT) request to Renfrewshire Council for two historic but dilapidated buildings: Longcroft Cottages and the Miracle Span Store. The trust has offered a nominal £1 for the properties, which it describes as "derelict and fire-damaged," with plans to convert them into a modern, accessible, and inclusive community hub. The site, located on Longcroft Drive on the outskirts of Robertson Park, has been validated by the local authority as a valid application.
Plans for the Community Hub
In its submission, RDT outlined a vision to restore the neglected buildings and secure their long-term future as community assets. The proposed hub would provide a flexible operational base for the trust and its supported projects, including the Renfrew Men’s Shed, Friends of Robertson Park, Friends of Clydeview Park, the RDT Craft Group, and future initiatives. The facility would feature multi-purpose rooms, workshop and craft spaces, small offices, a kitchenette, storage, and accessible toilets, including a public toilet for park visitors. The Miracle Span Store, a Nissan Hut, would be refurbished as an outdoor workshop and secure storage for the Men’s Shed, enabling woodworking, repairs, upcycling, and outdoor learning.
Community Benefits and Activities
The trust emphasized the hub's role in bringing people together to share skills, build confidence, and develop new ideas for Renfrew. Activities would range from wellbeing sessions and community meetings to social events, training workshops, and affordable hire space for organisations, charities, and groups. RDT stated: "By restoring Longcroft Cottages and the Miracle Span Store, Renfrew Development Trust aims to create a lasting legacy – a safe, welcoming and vibrant space that strengthens local identity, encourages participation and supports Renfrew's continued growth as a thriving, community-driven town."
Decision Pending
A decision on the application will be made at a future meeting of the council’s CAT sub-committee. The trust’s bid highlights ongoing efforts to revitalise underused public assets for community benefit in Renfrewshire.
