Bedrooms are often the dustiest rooms in the home, but a simple change—removing extra fabrics like rugs and throws—can make a big difference. According to Gemma Henry from Bensons for Beds, these textiles are major dust collectors.
Why Bedrooms Get So Dusty
The main source of dust is the bed itself. Bedding materials like cotton and polyester attract fine particles, and friction from sheets and duvets releases microscopic fibres into the air. These fibres settle on surfaces, and movement stirs them up, where they get trapped by carpets and other fabrics.
The Solution: Remove Extra Fabrics
To reduce dust, remove superfluous fabric items such as rugs, blankets, or tapestries and wash them thoroughly. Keeping these items out of the bedroom for a week or two can significantly cut down on dust, meaning less frequent cleaning.
Other Summer Cleaning Tips
Wash bedding at least once a week during summer to eliminate dust build-up. Vacuum or brush the mattress monthly to deter dust mites. Don't forget curtains, blinds, and lampshades, which often harbour dust. Finally, reduce clutter, as it attracts dust, and wipe down surfaces like bookcases and dressing tables.
