Moss on patios can be both unsightly and a slip hazard, but fans of cleaning influencer Mrs Hinch have shared a simple method using a common household item: washing powder. Members of the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group have praised the technique as an effective alternative to pressure washers or harsh chemicals.
One group member, Yaz Elizabeth, asked for advice after noticing green growth on her patio slabs that returned shortly after jet-washing. Many respondents recommended sprinkling laundry detergent directly onto the moss. Tracey McKeown advised: 'Sprinkle Daz washing powder on it then leave for the rain to wash off or hose it.'
Linda Waddington reported long-lasting results: 'I used a box of biodegradable washing powder. Just sprinkle over the moss and leave for 15 minutes. That was two years ago, and it's never returned.' Others suggested dampening the area first to help the powder absorb, then rinsing after a few minutes or days.
Gardening expert Ben Hilton of The Yard and Garden confirmed the method's effectiveness, explaining: 'Detergent works by breaking down the cell walls of moss, causing the plant to dehydrate and die. It is most effective when used sparingly and only on the moss itself.'
