Agapanthus are at their peak now, thriving in hot, sunny weather. But as summer progresses, the tall flower stems can start to droop, and the display can lose its wow factor. A quick, low-effort fix can lift them back up and keep those striking flower heads looking their best.
Why Agapanthus Droop
Agapanthus originate from a hotter climate, so they tolerate sunny and hot weather easily. Their spherical flower displays stand tall and proud in pots and beds across gardens and stately homes. The individual flowers open up, becoming a favourite of bees on their pollinating rounds.
However, as summer moves on, the stems can droop, and the flowers get closer to the ground. Agapanthus tend to have multiple flower stems, and these can be loosely but securely grouped together with a piece of garden twine.
The 30-Second Fix
It is always handy to have a ball of garden twine ready to help manage plants and flowers. The twine should be gently placed mid-height around the flower stems and gently pulled tight so the drooping stems lift upright and collectively support each other. It doesn't need to be a perfectly upright display, just lifting the flowers.
After the Blooms Fade
The flowers will gradually drop throughout late summertime, and the plant will move to producing seed. The pods containing seed will brown off and can be collected in late autumn. The seeds can be sown directly in the ground or grown in a pot.
Agapanthus can be left to self-seed if space allows for them to take over an area of the garden. The green foliage should be covered with fleece over winter; otherwise, the leaves become mushy and brown and die off. Let them enjoy the hot sun of summertime, but remember to cover and shelter over winter to get the very best from their growing and flowering cycle.
