Queens Park Heywood: Boating Lake, BMX Track, Play Areas

Queens Park in Heywood, Greater Manchester, is a Green Flag-awarded park featuring a boating lake, a BMX track, two play areas, and a bandstand that has been converted into an outdoor theatre. Visitors have called it 'the best park in Greater Manchester'.

History and Royal Connection

The park was presented to the people of Heywood by Queen Victoria in 1879. Funding came from local landowner Charles Martin Newhouse, who died in 1873 in a derailed train carriage accident. As he died without a will, his estate passed to the Duchy of Lancaster, and Heywood Local Board accepted the land as a gift from the Queen.

The land was nearly used for a school, but it was decided to create a park instead. In 1923, the park was extended and a boating lake was added, which remains today.
