Lavender enthusiasts are being urged to focus on propagation in July rather than pruning to secure vibrant blooms. According to Michael, known as the Mediterranean Gardener on TikTok, July is the optimum time for taking lavender cuttings, a crucial step for plant health and flower production.
Why July Is Key for Lavender Propagation
Lavender, with its stunning purple blooms and ability to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, is a favourite in UK gardens. However, proper care is essential. Michael explains that July offers the ideal conditions for propagation, as stems are beginning to harden off but are still flexible enough for rooting.
He advises selecting stems that are straight, healthy, and free of flower buds. "What we're looking for in a candidate for a cutting is a nice, straight, healthy stem that doesn't have any flower buds," he said. "We're looking for something that is just starting to harden off."
How to Take Lavender Cuttings
The process is straightforward. Michael recommends identifying stems where the colour changes from green to a slightly woodier tone, indicating they are ready. He cautions against cutting too far down the stem, as this "won't do anything." Instead, strip all leaves from the stem except a few at the top, then make a clean cut at the base near the leaf nodes.
Once cuttings are taken, they should be placed in pots with the stem positioned between the soil and the rim. Michael advises against overwatering: "Mediterranean herbs don't want to be too wet, so you want to spray this maybe once or twice a day, that's more than enough."
Aftercare for Lavender Cuttings
Position the pots in a sheltered but sunny spot. Once new leaves emerge, the cuttings can be repotted into larger containers. This method ensures healthy root development and vibrant future blooms.
Gardeners are also reminded that lavender needs extra care during hot weather. While established plants are drought-tolerant, they suffer in extreme dry or wet conditions. Avoid overwatering and ensure good drainage to keep plants thriving through summer.
