With summer in full swing, homeowners are eager to restore their gardens to pristine condition, but a leading expert has issued a warning about the dangers of trending cleaning hacks. Andy Mclaughlin, sales and operational director at RF Paving, cautions that some methods promoted on social media platforms like TikTok can cause irreversible damage to paving and surrounding areas.
Chemicals to Avoid When Cleaning Paving
Mclaughlin emphasizes that not all cleaning products are suitable for every type of paving. "There are products and chemicals that should be avoided completely when cleaning paving," he said. "It is just knowing which substance can be used on which paving, along with knowing what type of marks need to be cleaned off the surface." He warns that industrial-strength substances, such as brick acid, can cause chemical reactions on delicate stones like limestone, leaving permanent marks. The pH level of a cleaner must match the paving material to prevent damage.
Risks of Using Indoor Cleaners Outdoors
Viral videos have showcased the use of household cleaners like The Pink Stuff Cream Cleaner on patios, but Mclaughlin advises caution. While such products may not harm the paving itself, they can pose risks to surrounding plants, lawns, and furniture. "Consideration should be given to the surrounding areas; like lawns or planted borders, wood, planters, or patio furniture," he noted. If contamination occurs, dowsing with water can dilute the substance, but it is essential to follow manufacturer's instructions and use chemicals with care.
Safest Ways to Clean Paving
Pressure washing is effective for stubborn areas, but it requires proper preparation. Mclaughlin recommends clearing the area of furniture and sweeping away loose debris first. For block paving or patios, he suggests using a sturdy sweeping brush, leaf blower, shovel, wheelbarrow, pressure washer, and fine sand for re-sanding joints. "Starting with a clear surface free of dirt and debris, remove any organic growth like moss or weeds. These can be removed using a pressure washer, and this will also remove any old sand in between the paving joints," he explained. For those without a pressure washer, a block paving cleaner like lithofin outdoor cleaner can help. After cleaning, allow the paving to dry for a day before applying new sand to fill the joints evenly.
Alternative Cleaning Methods
For a gentler approach, Mclaughlin recommends using a garden sprayer with an undiluted patio cleaner, letting it work for two to ten hours, then rinsing with water. Alternatively, a simple mixture of baking soda and water serves as a safe, eco-friendly, and affordable option that is gentle on paving materials.
