Gardening specialist and TikTok creator Ish has highlighted a straightforward mistake many gardeners make when planting small trees in pots, potentially hindering their ability to thrive. In a recent video, Ish emphasized in the caption: "Avoid this common mistake when planting small trees into pots. If you have made this error, your plants will struggle to grow, but it can be easily corrected."
How Compost Choice Affects Plant Growth
The expert disclosed that this often-overlooked blunder revolves around the type and quantity of compost used in plant pots or raised beds. Ish explained that while various tree types can flourish "really well" in containers, using improper or insufficient compost can lead to nutrient starvation. "A good multipurpose compost will allow this to absolutely thrive," Ish noted, "but if you don't put enough in here—like I've got a three-inch drop—you're actually not giving it enough, and it might actually starve. Remember, in a pot, it's got nowhere else to go, so the amount of nutrients in here has to provide everything it needs to thrive."
Correcting the Mistake Without Harming the Tree
Ish clarified that simply adding more compost is not always the solution, as planting trees too deep can cause root rot from over-saturation. Instead, follow these steps to adjust the soil level safely:
- Allow the compost and soil to dry out over a couple of days.
- Gently pull the tree upward by the stem to the desired height.
- Work the edges of the compost to break down the soil, letting it fall naturally to the bottom of the pot.
- Repeat until the tree is positioned at the new height.
- Briefly remove the tree and its root ball to add fresh compost to the base layer.
- Place the tree back in the pot, ensuring it sits higher than before.
