Plant Echinacea Now for Stunning Autumn Garden Colour
Plant Echinacea Now for Autumn Garden Colour

Gardeners are being urged to plant echinacea, also known as the coneflower, this August to ensure vibrant colour well into autumn. The plant is celebrated for its bold, low-maintenance appeal and its ability to support local wildlife.

Why Echinacea is a Must-Plant

TikTok gardener Georgia Featherstone, who shares her journey as a beginner grower, has highlighted the benefits of echinacea: "Every garden needs one of these, because it flowers right into autumn and gives food to both the bees and the birds. This is echinacea, and it is great for late-season colour because it will take its flowers right into September and even October."

She also noted that in winter, the dried flowers attract birds, especially goldfinches, which feed on the seeds. This makes echinacea a valuable addition for both colour and wildlife support.

Growing Requirements

Echinacea thrives in sunny spots, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for dry stretches. For care, the plant needs well-drained soil, as it dislikes waterlogging. Regular deadheading encourages a longer flowering season, and dividing clumps every three to five years keeps plants vigorous. Watch for slugs and snails on younger plants, and ensure good airflow to prevent powdery mildew.

Hosepipe Ban Considerations

As many areas of the UK face hosepipe bans, watering new plants may be restricted. Breaking the rules can lead to fines up to £1,000. The most affected areas include parts of South East England, Wales, and Devon. Gardeners can check their local restrictions via their water company or the Water UK website.
