Gardeners are being urged to plant daffodil bulbs this weekend to secure a ‘lovely display' in spring, as the flower remains one of the most popular spring blooms in the UK.
Planting now for spring colour
Preparation for the uplifting spring display starts this month, with daffodil bulbs needing to be planted before the season turns. Whether placed in a single pot or across beds and borders, the bulbs will establish roots and burst into life next spring.
A simple method for a sizeable display is to dig a small trench along the edge of a lawn, driveway, or garden border. Using a lawn edging tool to cut a rectangle in the turf and lifting it with a spade creates a planting area roughly 30cm wide and 15cm deep—sufficient for the bulbs to establish, with the length depending on available space.
How to plant for best results
Bulbs should be placed with the roots end facing downwards and the tip upwards. Where bulbs fall sideways, gardeners need not worry, as roots will grow downwards and shoots upwards regardless.
After planting, replace the soil and turf over the bulbs and walk over the area to compress the turf back into place. The edging will repair over the coming weeks and months.
Variety extends the display
Choosing a variety of daffodil can produce a differing display across several months of springtime. While traditional yellow flowers and trumpets are perfectly fine, different shapes and sizes are available.
The effort invested now will create a display that returns year after year, rewarding gardeners with a vibrant spring show.
