Garden patios can be restored to a 'spotless' condition using just two common kitchen items, according to a YouTuber's method that avoids harsh chemicals and pressure washers. The approach, shared by Fix it with Fowler, uses soda crystals and washing-up liquid to tackle stains and discolouration caused by outdoor furniture and summer entertaining.
Why Your Patio Needs This Treatment
After a summer of heatwaves in the UK, many patios have suffered from spilt food and drinks, as well as general wear and tear. With cooler weather arriving, it's an ideal time to clean paving stones without resorting to aggressive products, especially for households with pets or young children.
The Eco-Friendly Cleaning Method
The expert explained: "I'm going to show you how to clean it without using any harmful chemicals, especially for the environment and even for your pets. The best thing is you don't even need a jet wash."
First, clear any weeds from between the slabs and sweep the surface with a stiff-bristle brush. Dampen the patio with a garden hose, then apply a light coating of soda crystals, ensuring even coverage without using the entire bag. Next, add a small amount of washing-up liquid or dish soap over the area.
Scrubbing and Rinsing for Best Results
Scrub the solution into the slabs with a stiff brush, working section by section. Allow the mixture to sit for 48 hours to 'work its magic', then rinse thoroughly with the garden hose. The marks should disappear, leaving the patio looking refreshed.
The expert added: "This is eco-friendly, good for the environment and specifically good for your pets."
