As the UK braces for another heatwave with temperatures set to exceed 30°C this week, households are being urged to follow expert advice to prevent damaging their gardens. Gardening expert James, known to his TikTok followers, has shared crucial insights on the only correct way to water plants during hot weather.
Water the Soil, Not the Leaves
James emphasized that the best way to hydrate your garden is by watering the soil directly, avoiding the leaves. He warned against the common temptation to water plants every day during a heatwave, which often leads to overwatering. "We're in the middle of a heatwave and there's the temptation of watering plants every day and what a lot of people always do is overwater their plants," James said. "So I'm going to show how to avoid overwatering plants and how to keep your plants healthy and at the same time reserve what water you have."
Optimal Timing for Watering
Timing is key, according to James. He advised watering plants in the early morning, but if that's not possible, late evening also works. "If you can't do that then I would say late afternoon or late evening is probably the optimal time because it then gives those plants some time to dry off," he explained. He noted that wet soil can attract slugs, and watering in the middle of the day causes water to evaporate quickly, failing to reach the roots.
Heavy Watering for Deep Root Growth
When it comes to technique, James recommended watering heavily rather than giving a light sprinkle. "I like to water heavily and a light sprinkle is no good. You do want to water and leave it to soak to get that soil really moist and wet," he said. This method promotes deeper root growth, preventing roots from developing near the surface.
Check Soil Moisture Before Watering
To avoid overwatering, James advised checking the soil by sticking fingers into it to feel for dryness or moisture. Only water if the soil is dry. "So it's really important to check your soil before watering," he concluded. "If you overwater those roots, it could rot, you could promote fungal infections and diseases. So don't just water blindly because it's hot and assume you need to water everyday. Do check your plants, keep the soil at optimal moisture, and good luck."
