One Step to Fix Patchy Lawns and Grow Thicker Greener Grass

Gardening expert Tom Strowlger has shared a simple method to repair bare patches and help lawns grow a carpet of lush green grass. He is currently sowing fresh grass seed across thin and bare patches of all sizes to thicken lawns and maintain a lush green appearance.

How to repair bare patches

Strowlger explains that lawn soil may be firmer due to warmer weather, but this actually means germination can occur within days with just a touch of moisture. He begins by tidying up and raking the bare soil, then gives the patch a thorough watering. The soil needs to be moist before scattering grass seed across the area using a mini handheld spreader.

After scattering the seed, he covers it with a layer of lawn dressing, general-purpose compost, or topsoil. This technique works equally well on any size patch, and the process remains the same throughout, resulting in a lush, verdant carpet of new grass.

Tips for established lawns

At this time of year, grass seeds can germinate within days. It is advisable to allow the new grass to fully establish itself before walking on it. For those wishing to give the entire lawn a boost, a granular fertiliser can provide an excellent spring and summer feed.

The reward is a beautiful, lush lawn to enjoy throughout the summer months and beyond. Strowlger also shares more seasonal gardening advice and tips on Instagram and TikTok at @garden_with_tom.
