DIY Olive Oil Cleaner Restores Shine to Dull Wooden Floors
Olive Oil Cleaner Revives Wooden Floor Shine

Wooden floors can look dull and worn down in spring, but a natural wood floor cleaner using olive oil may help restore their shine without harsh chemicals, according to DIY specialist Nell Regan Kartychok, founder of Rhythms of Play.

Why Olive Oil Works on Wooden Floors

Olive oil serves as a natural polish that revives wood's shine when added to a mop bucket. It nourishes the wood, enhances colour, and helps disguise small marks or superficial scratches, eliminating the need for costly products. When combined with an acidic component like vinegar, the mixture effectively dissolves residue and keeps floors dust-free throughout spring.

Recipe for a Natural Wood Floor Cleaner

Kartychok recommends the following ingredients: 400ml of water, 60ml of white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar for darker floors), two tablespoons of olive oil, and 20 drops of lemon essential oil (optional). Lemon essential oil contains limonene, which tackles grease accumulation and has antimicrobial properties. However, pets cannot metabolise essential oils, so omit this ingredient if you have a cat or dog.

It is important to note that olive oil becomes slippery when over-applied. Just a few tablespoons are sufficient for effectiveness, so do not use too much.

Method for Deep Cleaning

Combine the water, olive oil, vinegar, and essential oil (if using) in a 16-ounce glass spray bottle. Shake the bottle thoroughly before each application. Lightly spray the floor with the mixture—never saturate it, as excessive moisture can harm the wood. Mop in small areas to ensure no section remains damp for an extended period. After mopping, go over the floor with a microfibre cloth or dry mop to ensure it is thoroughly dry and to avoid streaks.

Your wooden floor should now be spotless and gleaming, allowing you to cross deep cleaning the floor off your spring cleaning checklist.
