Newcastle's Quayside was bathed in yellow as the 23rd annual Sunshine Run took place, with more than 350 runners participating in the vibrant event. The race, organized by The Chronicle Sunshine Fund, is a key fixture in the charity's fundraising calendar and took place under glorious June sunshine.
A Picturesque Charity Race
The Sunshine Run is considered one of the prettiest charity races in the country, offering stunning views of the River Tyne, the Tyne Bridge, and the Millennium Bridge. This year, 17 teams from local organizations competed, showcasing strong community support. The charity expressed gratitude to all runners, volunteers, spectators, and fundraisers who contributed to the event's success.
Fundraising Impact
If each runner raised just £23 for the 23rd anniversary, the charity could generate over £8,000 extra to support children with disabilities, additional needs, and terminal illnesses in the region. All funds raised stay locally, directly impacting families in the North East.
The Sunshine Fund provides specialist and adapted equipment for children and young people with disabilities, special educational needs, and complex medical conditions. This equipment, not provided by the NHS or local authorities, helps remove barriers to independence, dignity, and full participation.
Sponsorship and Support
The 23rd Sunshine Run was proudly sponsored by Stagecoach for the sixth consecutive year. Stagecoach also offered a free bag drop service, while Sanco Pizza donated prizes for the fastest male and female runners.
David Wilson, Head of Charity at The Chronicle Sunshine Fund, said: "Every year the Sunshine Run shows the strength of our community and how people come together for the hundreds of children and families we support. The funds raised have never been more needed, but equally, with every runner we're raising awareness of the challenges our children face and the opportunity we have to make a difference."
Steve Walker, Managing Director of Stagecoach North East, added: "We're incredibly proud to support the Sunshine Run for the sixth year running. At Stagecoach, we're committed to connecting people and communities, and there is no better way to do that than by helping The Sunshine Fund provide life-changing equipment for local children. It's always an inspiring evening on the Quayside, and we can't wait to see everyone at the start line."
Community Spirit
The event featured a sea of yellow, with participants of all ages, including dogs dressed in yellow, enjoying the friendly atmosphere. Runners were seen warming up, celebrating, and sharing special moments along the Quayside and on the Millennium Bridge. The race concluded with medal ceremonies and cheers for all finishers.
