New mechanical sweepers are being deployed across South Lanarkshire to help tackle litter. The Karcher machines were selected after extensive trials and consultation with staff over a six-month period. They have replaced 11 of the 21 mechanical sweepers in use across the area.
Targeting High-Footfall Areas
The machines will be primarily used on all the high-footfall areas such as shopping centres, shop fronts and around schools, as well as within estates, and will be cleaning mainly paths but also some roads where appropriate.
Chair of the council’s community and enterprise resources committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: "The new machines will have a significant impact on the environment and general cleanliness of our towns and villages."
Features and Benefits
"They are extremely effective in lifting litter and general waste, removing weeds and removing silt to minimise weed growth." The machines are fitted with adjustable, twin front-brushes and integrated power-washers, and some have been fitted with suction brushes to help with leaves that can pose significant problems in the autumn and winter.
"They will be located throughout South Lanarkshire and used all across the area, particularly in high-footfall areas," Brown added.
