Cleaning enthusiast and TikTok creator Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila, has shared a simple yet effective method to prevent mould growth inside wardrobes using just two common household ingredients: uncooked rice and lemon oil. The hack, which she describes as something everyone should know but 'no one ever teaches you,' aims to absorb excess moisture before it can develop into mould.
Why Mould Thrives in Wardrobes
Mould is a persistent problem in UK homes, particularly in wardrobes where dampness, poor air circulation, and organic materials like clothing create ideal conditions for spores to multiply. High humidity, condensation on cold surfaces, and damp clothing all contribute to mould growth, which can damage clothes, shoes, and shelving. According to DIY expert Tim Warren from Adkwik, the ideal humidity level inside wardrobes should be between 40% and 60%.
The Rice and Lemon Oil Solution
In a recent video, Chantel Mila demonstrated placing uncooked rice inside a fabric drawstring bag along with a dash of lemon oil. Rice acts as a natural desiccant, drawing moisture from the air and surrounding materials, while lemon oil helps keep the wardrobe smelling fresh. 'Placing these in your wardrobe can help to keep the air dry, reducing the risk of mould growth,' said Tim Warren. He also noted that baking soda is another effective desiccant, and artificial options like silica gel packets or charcoal bags are available.
An Alternative to Dehumidifiers
While many households rely on dehumidifiers to combat dampness, Chantel's hack offers a cost-effective alternative for those without one. The rice and lemon oil mixture can be placed in a fabric bag and hung or set inside the wardrobe to absorb moisture continuously. This method is particularly useful for those looking to 'work smarter, not harder' when it comes to home maintenance.
