Morrisons has launched a new 'free food' scheme ahead of the FIFA World Cup, but there is a catch. Eligible customers can claim free fruit at Morrisons on selected dates over the coming weeks. The supermarket is helping shoppers prepare for the tournament by offering free fresh oranges to children visiting English or Scottish stores on match days during the group stages.
Nostalgic Nod to Football Tradition
In a nostalgic nod to the classic grassroots football tradition of orange slices at half-time, children can score a free orange on England and Scotland match days. The announcement was made on social media on June 10, bringing a juicy twist to summer football celebrations.
Key Dates for Free Oranges
The scheme starts on June 14, coinciding with Scotland's opening game, followed by their fixtures on June 19 and 24. England fans can grab oranges for games on June 17, 23, and 27. The offer is available while stocks last at Morrisons Market Street.
Building on Existing Initiative
This promotion builds on Morrisons' free fruit scheme for children, running since 2018, to help families incorporate more fruit into their diets. A spokesperson said: "Whether the family is screaming at the telly from the sofa, throwing a wild match-day party, or the kids are chasing their own football glory in the back garden, Morrisons is making sure young supporters stay match-ready."
Wales Also Included
Families in Wales can also benefit from Morrisons' free fruit initiative, with complimentary fruit for children available at local Market Street counters.
Jacob Uren, Senior Citrus Trader at Morrisons, commented: "Encouraging children to enjoy fresh fruit has long been important to us at Morrisons, and orange slices are such a nostalgic part of football culture. We hope our free oranges help keep little fans refreshed, energised and ready to cheer on England and Scotland this summer."
