Monty Don has advised gardeners that August is the perfect time to trim hedges, as the risk of disturbing nesting birds has passed. The gardening expert notes that most birds have fledged by now, making it safe to carry out this task.
Why August is the best time
Writing on his website, the Gardeners' World presenter explained: "It is safe now to trim hedges in the knowledge that the vast majority of nesting birds have fledged." He added that pruning in summer leads to "slower, less vigorous regrowth" compared to winter, helping hedges maintain their shape for the rest of the year.
Monty recommends starting with the sides, ensuring a slight outward slope from top to bottom to allow sunlight to reach lower branches. "Finally, cut the top, using a string strung between canes as a guide," he added.
Benefits beyond aesthetics
Trimming in summer also prevents fast growth that can spread across paths and driveways in warmer months. Pruning encourages new side shoots, creating a denser hedge that improves air circulation and reduces fungal issues.
Gardeners should avoid heavy pruning during extreme heat or prolonged dry spells to prevent stressing plants. Monty also suggests cutting long grass or wildflower meadows in August, allowing flowers to set seeds and bulbous foliage to die back naturally.
