As another UK heatwave approaches, keeping gardens tidy for barbecues and gatherings becomes a priority. However, foxes and seagulls rummaging through bins can leave rubbish strewn across the garden. A TikTok binman, known as The No1 Binman, has shared a simple technique to deter these pests.
Simple Milk Container Trick
In response to a viewer's question about keeping foxes and seagulls away from food bins, the binman explained that there are 'a few ways' to deal with the issue. The most obvious is securing food waste in bags to mask smells. However, a lesser-known tip involves placing an empty milk container filled with water on top of the bin lid. He stated: 'That will stop the foxes.'
The reason this works is that foxes are mostly active at night. Streetlamps shining on the garden reflect off the water in the milk container, which foxes reportedly dislike, causing them to stay away. The binman also clarified that most binmen will place the container back into the bin after collection, preventing it from blowing away and 'solving two problems'.
Additional Tips for Pest Control
The binman also advised on bin placement. He warned against leaving food waste bins in direct sunlight, as heat accelerates rotting, attracting not only seagulls but also maggots and flies. He recommended storing bins under a table or chair in a shaded area with the lid locked tight to prevent odours.
By following these tips, gardeners can reduce mess and keep their outdoor spaces presentable during the summer months.
