A chef whose passion for Mexican cuisine was ignited during a World Cup is set to open a new food outlet in Newcastle's historic Grainger Market. Dean Eccles, who has worked alongside culinary figures such as Gary Rhodes and Richard Branson, will launch LJ's Mexican Street Food in June, bringing his favourite flavours to the city centre.
World Cup Inspiration
Dean's love for Mexican food dates back more than 25 years to the 1998 World Cup in France. His first match was Korea against Mexico, and he recalls: "When we arrived, there was a car park full of Mexican chefs cooking from pop-up stalls. They were making and sharing tacos and quesadillas, and it was the first time I'd experienced authentic Mexican flavours. I was completely hooked."
Since then, Dean has been cooking Mexican food at home and through pop-up events. He says: "I genuinely love it, and there's nothing better than seeing customers enjoy those flavours in the same way I did all those years ago."
LJ's Mexican Street Food
The outlet's name pays homage to his children, Lottie and Jacob, who will help run the business. It will occupy a unit in Alley 3 of the 191-year-old market, which recently underwent a £9 million transformation. The menu will feature traditional tacos and quesadillas made with fresh ingredients sourced from neighbouring market stalls whenever possible. Dean plans to change the menu regularly to reflect seasonality and availability, but his signature sauce—a blend of green chilli and tahini—will remain a constant.
Dean, originally from West Yorkshire, moved to the North East over 20 years ago and quickly fell in love with the Grainger Market. "There's nowhere quite like it," he says. "It has such a unique atmosphere and a real sense of community. Since getting the keys, I've had great conversations with fellow traders and customers. It feels like exactly the right place to start this new chapter."
