The Marymass Flower Show, which traditionally concludes the Marymass Festival, will take place next Monday, August 24, in the Volunteer Rooms. Doors open at 2.30pm, with the opening ceremony at 3pm.
Invitation to take part
Irvine Horticultural Society is extending a warm invitation to everyone who would like to take part in this year’s show. Bill Anderson, Vice President/Secretary, said: “We have sections for flowers, veg, crafts, floral art, baking and jams and a section for schoolchildren.
“There’s also the novice section for first timers. You don’t need to be a ‘professional’ to enter. We are all amateurs who bring along our various entries every year to help fill the tables with items that everyone can enjoy. Some of us, like me, don’t expect to win but, if we do, it’s a nice surprise.”
Encouraging new entrants
Anderson highlighted the friendly rivalry among regular entrants who help keep the show running by entering a number of classes. He added: “Never think that your entry isn’t good enough. It’s amazing what can win and there are people there who can give you tips on almost anything in the show. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard someone say, ‘I reckon I could do better than that’. Well, these are the people we’d like to welcome along to the show.”
He urged: “We urgently need you to bring along your pot plants, flowers, crafts, baking and veg. Have a chat with us and we’ll be pleased to give you some advice on the show and what you can enter. We are also looking for helpers and new members for the society. If you’re interested in taking part, let me know.”
