Why paint your fence?
Bradley Spencer said: "We don't all have as much space in our gardens as we might like, but that doesn't mean we can make the most of what we do have. Making your outdoor space look and feel bigger than it really is might just mean giving your garden fence a new coat of paint."
Lighter shades like off-white or light grey reflect sunlight and soften the garden's edges, making it feel more spacious. Earthy tints such as soft browns or greens also help blend boundaries with natural colours.
Cost and preparation
A tin of fence paint starts at around £15 from many hardware stores. Before painting, ensure the fence is clean and dry. Remove dirt or flaking paint with a pressure washer or scrub brush, soap and water. After cleaning, sand lightly and address any blemishes.
Alternative space-making tips
If painting isn't appealing, Bradley suggests other techniques: use climbing plants on walls to free up floor space, place mirrors to reflect attractive garden areas, and avoid clutter with practical, versatile furniture.
