A simple homemade solution of white vinegar, salt, and washing-up liquid has proven effective at killing patio weeds, offering a cheap and chemical-free alternative to commercial products.
Natural weed killer tested
Weeds are a persistent nuisance, especially in the cracks between patio slabs. Manual removal is laborious, and chemical weed killers can harm plants and wildlife. Seeking a safer method, a gardener tried a DIY recipe found online, using three common kitchen items.
The mixture was sprayed onto weeds on the patio, left overnight, and by the next day the weeds had shrivelled and died. The dead plants were then much easier to remove than live ones.
Simple recipe
To make the solution, combine 500ml of white vinegar with two tablespoons of salt, stirring until dissolved. Add two teaspoons of washing-up liquid and mix thoroughly. Transfer to a spray bottle if needed.
Apply the solution generously to the weed's leaves, ensuring they are thoroughly saturated. For larger weeds, pour some solution directly onto the plant as well. The weeds should start drooping within hours, with full die-off typically occurring within 24 hours.
The solution is best applied on a clear, sunny day to prevent rain from washing it away. It is not recommended for weeds growing in soil, as it can increase soil acidity, making it more suitable for patios and paved areas.
