Peace lilies, with their striking white blooms, can turn any space into a real showstopper — but they are famously difficult to please. Coaxing them into thriving and flowering demands close care and a touch of specialist know-how.
These finicky plants can falter when confronted with inadequate lighting, insufficient humidity, or improper watering, leaving them looking decidedly lacklustre and bare of blooms.
However, the secret to unlocking their full splendour might just be lurking in your kitchen bin. While consistent watering and maintaining high humidity levels are vital for peace lilies, your daily coffee routine could actually be the key to their flourishing, reports the Mirror US.
Those used coffee grounds you bin every morning are packed with nitrogen, a crucial nutrient that encourages plant growth and keeps foliage healthy and vibrant. But nitrogen is not the only benefit. Coffee grounds can also adjust your soil's pH level to precisely what peace lilies favour, reports the Express.
Thanks to coffee's inherent acidity, incorporating grounds into the compost creates the ideal growing conditions, offering multiple benefits in one straightforward move.
David Denyer, a seasoned horticulturist from Eflorist, stresses that your morning coffee's remnants serve a dual function — they invigorate your plants while deterring pests.
David said: "You swear by your morning cup of coffee, but some plant pests shudder at it. So, do not toss those used grounds — they are a free, year-round plant food that gives your indoor plants a nutrient boost, improves your soil, and may even deter insects and slugs."
Making use of your leftover grounds could not be easier — simply stir a spoonful into cold water and apply it directly to the soil. This clever technique does not just nourish your plants; it also works exceptionally well for improving soil structure and retaining moisture, enabling it to absorb water and nutrients far more efficiently.
That said, there is a word of caution — gardening enthusiasts should not get carried away. While you might knock back several cups a day yourself, your peace lilies require considerably less caffeine in their diet.
Aim to fertilise roughly once a month, as over-application risks turning the soil overly acidic and nitrogen-rich, which can cause serious damage to your foliage.
There is one final important point worth noting — only ever use grounds that have already been brewed. Fresh coffee grounds still contain considerably high caffeine levels, which can actually obstruct root and shoot growth in plants and prevent those beautiful blooms from emerging.
