A woman has shared a recipe for homemade KFC-style wraps that cost just £1.40 each, far less than the £7.49–£8.29 price of a single KFC burger. Helen, who posts on TikTok as @hintofhelen, says the wraps taste “better than KFC” and that “the whole family will love these”.
Ingredients and cost
The recipe uses two chicken burgers (Helen recommends Aldi’s frozen breast fillet ones), two hash browns, shredded iceberg lettuce, two tablespoons of mayo, two tablespoons of hot sauce, two mini wraps, and four to six cheese slices. All ingredients were bought from Aldi, Helen’s preferred supermarket.
At £1.40 per wrap, or £5.60 for four, it’s a fraction of the cost of a takeaway. One commenter wrote: “Such a unique fakeaway idea, I have to try this!”
Step-by-step method
Cook the chicken burgers according to packet instructions – Helen uses an air fryer. Add the hash browns about eight minutes in so they finish together. While cooking, shred the lettuce and mix the mayo and hot sauce to your preferred spice level.
Assemble the wraps by spreading sauce on the wrap, then layering cheese, sauce, chicken, cheese, hash brown, and more cheese. Fry the wrap in a pan on medium heat on both sides, using tongs to crisp the bottom edge. Finally, open the wrap and add the lettuce.
Why fakeaways are a good idea
Fakeaways let you enjoy a Friday night treat without the high cost of takeaways, which often include delivery fees, service charges, and extras. Cooking at home is cheaper per serving, and you can batch-cook or use leftovers.
They can also be healthier, as you control ingredients and portion sizes. Takeaways tend to be high in salt, sugar, and saturated fat, and often cooked in more oil. With a fakeaway, you can make simple swaps like leaner meat, more vegetables, wholegrain wraps, and lighter sauces, while still using herbs, spices, garlic, and chilli for flavour.
