Keep Wasps Out of Your Garden This Summer with 69p Supermarket Item They 'Hate'
Keep Wasps Out of Your Garden with 69p Supermarket Item

DIY expert Glen Peskett from Saxton Blades Multi Tools has revealed that cucumber peels can help deter wasps from gardens during summer. Wasps are known to dislike the smell of cucumber peels, making them less likely to linger around outdoor eating areas. A cucumber costs as little as 69p at Aldi, 70p at Sainsbury's, or 99p at Tesco.

How Cucumber Peels Work Against Wasps

According to Peskett, the theory is that wasps are not keen on the scent emitted by cucumber peels. He noted that while it won't work miracles, especially if there is a nearby nest, some people find it helps reduce wasp presence around seating areas. The trick involves placing a few fresh cucumber peels on patios, garden tables, or wherever wasps tend to appear. The peels should be replaced periodically as they dry out.

Complementary Strategies for Wasp Control

If cucumber peels alone are insufficient, combining them with other habits can further reduce wasp activity. Peskett emphasized that the most effective approach is to manage food, drinks, and rubbish. He stated: "People often look for quick fixes, but the biggest thing is keeping food, drinks and rubbish under control. That's what usually attracts wasps in the first place. The cucumber peel trick is just a simple extra that some people swear by."

Practical Tips to Deter Wasps

  • Keep sugary drinks covered when outdoors
  • Clear away food scraps as soon as possible
  • Wipe down outdoor tables after use
  • Ensure bins and recycling containers remain closed
  • Avoid leaving sweet foods exposed for long periods

While the cucumber peel method may not stop every wasp, it offers a low-cost, low-effort option using an item that would otherwise be discarded.
