Potatoes are the most wasted food in British households, with 2.9 million thrown away every day, often because they sprout before their time. However, a simple kitchen item can help keep them fresh for months.
Courtenay Hartford, founder of Creekline House, has shared a “quick and easy” method to extend the shelf life of potatoes: store them with an apple.
The apple trick
Courtenay said: “So here’s what you do: Open your bag of potatoes. Toss in an apple. Store it in a cool, dark place away from sunlight as you usually would. That’s it! That one little apple can prevent an entire ten-pound bag of potatoes from starting to sprout all by itself. In my experience, the variety of apple doesn’t make a difference, and neither does the type of potato.”
Potatoes spoil when exposed to light or moisture, which can trigger hormonal changes and activate the potato eyes—dormant buds on the surface. These buds can grow into sprouts, causing the potato to release solanine, a chemical that makes potatoes toxic or turn them green.
Why apples work
Apples release ethylene gas, a plant hormone that helps fruits ripen. When stored near potatoes, this gas can disrupt the hormones that trigger sprouting, helping keep them fresh.
This simple method can make a big bag of potatoes last longer, allowing you to enjoy autumn dinners without worrying about food waste.
Other storage tips
Apples can slow down sprouting, but proper storage is key. Potatoes should be kept in a cool, dark, and dry place, away from heat and sunlight. Avoid storing them near ovens, air fryers, or windows.
It is also recommended to keep potatoes away from other vegetables, especially onions and garlic, as they release excess moisture that can cause potatoes to rot. The best place to store potatoes is a pantry or a low cupboard near the floor, where they can last longer.
