Keep bread fresh for 2 weeks with clever storage hack that maintains softness
Keep bread fresh for 2 weeks with clever storage hack

Bread is a daily staple for many households, but it often ends up in the bin once it turns stale or passes its best. It ranks among the most commonly wasted foods, alongside bananas, with loaves frequently discarded before they are fully used. Waste management specialists Wheeldon Brothers have shared four simple methods to extend the shelf life of bread and keep it fresher for longer.

“By making a few simple adjustments, like controlling moisture and temperature, you can extend its life and reduce the amount that ends up in the bin,” the experts explained. These techniques focus on managing moisture and airflow to prevent mould while preserving softness.

Celery and holes in the bag

One lesser-known method involves adding a stick of celery to the bread bag. According to the experts, this can extend the shelf life of a fresh loaf by a week. Since a normal loaf lasts around one week, this hack can help bread stay fresh for up to two weeks.

“Celery gives off moisture, which helps prevent the bread from drying out without encouraging mould. It’s a clever way to maintain the softness of bread while storing it in the fridge,” they said.

Another tip is to cut small holes in the bread bag. “Moisture trapped in a sealed bag creates the perfect environment for mould to grow. Making a few small holes helps reduce that risk, just be careful not to overdo it, or the bread will dry out too quickly,” the experts advised. Some fresh loaves already have small holes in their packaging, so it is worth checking before adding more.

Sealed containers and freezing

Storing bread in an airtight container can also help maintain the ideal environment. The experts noted that a sealed container adds an extra barrier against external moisture and fridge odours. “Keeping the bread in its original bag and placing it inside a container with a tight-fitting lid is a great way to keep it fresher for longer,” they added.

Freezing is another effective option, as bread freezes extremely well and individual slices can be defrosted quickly or toasted straight from frozen. “Freezing bread is one of the most effective ways to preserve it. By freezing sliced bread, you can use exactly what you need, when you need it, reducing both waste and cost,” the experts said.

“With the right storage methods, bread can stay fresh and mould-free for up to three weeks. It’s a simple but powerful way to cut waste and get the most out of every loaf.”
