Japanese Acers Turn Red With One Soil Addition Now

Japanese Acers, also known as Japanese Maples, can maintain their vibrant red colour if gardeners add one thing to the soil now: a good-quality granular fertiliser. According to UrbanGardensWeb, feeding the tree in spring with the right fertiliser is crucial for keeping its rich burgundy hue.

Why Japanese Acers Lose Their Colour

The most common Japanese Acer colour is a deep red wine burgundy. However, the tree can lose its distinctive colouring if it becomes unhealthy. UrbanGardensWeb notes that problems such as aphid infestations, excessive direct sunlight causing scorching, and overwatering leading to waterlogged soil can all cause the leaves to fade.

The Key Fertiliser Step

To preserve the red colour, gardeners should apply a granular fertiliser in spring. UrbanGardensWeb advises: “Japanese maples benefit from good quality granular fertiliser. Mulch and apply fertiliser in spring to help the tree during its growth period. Avoid feeding in autumn, as this can encourage it to grow at the wrong time of year and adversely affect its course.”

Location and Sunlight Matter

Where the Acer is planted also affects its colour. According to MrMaple.Com, a Japanese Maple may not show red colour even if it is a red cultivar. The website explains: “Japanese Maples that are still in their sapling stage may not show prominent red colours, or may even be more green than red. Environmental factors also play a huge part in the colour of the leaves. If your tree is in full sun, you may see a spike of green colour in late summer due to the excess chlorophyll being stored in the plant.”

Optimal Conditions for Vibrant Red

MrMaple.Com recommends: “Optimal conditions to promote vivid colours is early morning sun and late day shade. Cultivar selection is also key if you're looking for a certain colour. Red Dragon & Emperor 1 are known to hold their red colour much better than other cultivars.”

Gardeners are urged to act now by applying fertiliser and ensuring the tree gets morning sun and afternoon shade to enjoy a brilliant red display all year round.
