As the UK experiences record-breaking high temperatures and dry weather, many gardeners are struggling to keep their plants alive, especially with hosepipe bans in force across several regions. However, a simple product could be the solution to maintaining vibrant hydrangeas and other flowers while also reducing water usage.
Self-watering globes offer relief
DIY and gardening enthusiast Olivia took to TikTok to demonstrate how self-watering globes, known as Water Buddies, have transformed her garden. These globes, which come in various sizes, slowly release water based on soil moisture, ensuring plants stay hydrated without constant watering.
Olivia explained: “You fill them up with water and screw the lid on and they slowly release water depending on how dry or wet the soil is. I have these smaller balls in my pot plants - it’s because I do notice they dry out quicker. They’re also great for hanging baskets as well.”
Heatwave demands more frequent refills
During the recent heatwave, Olivia found that the smaller globes needed refilling every three to four days, whereas in cooler conditions they could last about a week. She uses larger 1.5-litre globes for her hydrangeas, noting that she hasn’t watered her front garden for three to four days.
“I have not watered my front garden for three to four days now. I actually can’t remember the last time,” Olivia said. “Hydrangea is still very happy and if anyone has these in their garden, you know how dramatic they are if they get too dry.”

Olivia highly recommends the product, stating: “They are genuinely worth investing in - and for a pack of three for less than £30, not only does it keep your plants happy but also cuts down on your water bill.” The Water Buddy globes are available from Richard Jackson Garden and other retailers.
With hosepipe bans implemented by multiple water companies and the Met Office reporting the driest July on record for England and Wales, such solutions are becoming increasingly essential for gardeners.
