Humane Fox Deterrents for Your Garden

Foxes can be a nuisance in gardens, but there are humane ways to discourage them. According to Luke Newnes, a gardening expert at Hillarys, the key is to make your garden less appealing rather than trying to remove the animal.

Common Misconception

Many people think foxes visit randomly, but Newnes says: "One of the biggest misconceptions is that foxes are turning up for no reason. If they're visiting regularly, there's normally something attracting them, whether that's food, water or a place to shelter."

Practical Steps

To deter foxes, Newnes recommends securing bins, clearing fallen fruit, bringing pet food indoors overnight, and blocking gaps under sheds or decking. He also suggests motion-activated lights or fox-friendly deterrents.

Newnes advises against relocating foxes yourself: "I'd also avoid trying to relocate foxes yourself. It's stressful for the animal and often doesn't solve the problem anyway."
