Housekeeper's 60p Tip for Soft, Fluffy Towels Using White Vinegar
Housekeeper's 60p Tip for Soft, Fluffy Towels

Stepping out of the shower or bath into a cosy, soft towel is a simple pleasure many desire, but towels can quickly become rough and stiff. This happens due to detergent residues and body oils building up in the fabric. Using a tumble dryer can also make towels hard. Fortunately, there are several methods to revive them, and a professional housekeeper has shared her favourite trick on Facebook.

The Secret Ingredient: White Vinegar

Posting in the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips group, Jennifer Reynolds explained: 'I've seen many questions about keeping towels, especially white ones, soft. Over the years as a housekeeper washing towels daily, I've learned there's only one way: add white vinegar for an extra rinse after washing towels.' White vinegar not only removes detergent and fabric softener residue but also softens towels. The acetic acid in white vinegar dissolves these residues without leaving any strong smell. In fact, it can also eliminate musty odours that may have developed.

How to Use White Vinegar Safely

Do not pour white vinegar directly into the washing machine drum, as it can corrode rubber and plastic parts. Instead, soak towels in a vinegar solution before washing, then rinse them. Alternatively, add a small amount to the pre-rinse cycle drawer. Jennifer also advised against using fabric softener on towels, which helps keep them 'so soft and fluffy'. After washing, shake towels well to reshape cotton fibres and aid drying.

Affordable and Versatile

White vinegar is inexpensive, costing as little as 60p at supermarkets like Tesco, or around £1 at Home Bargains for a larger bottle. Many cleaners recommend Elbow Grease brand white vinegar. This eco-friendly product can also be used for removing limescale and cleaning washing machines. By following this simple tip, you can enjoy luxurious, fluffy towels without harsh chemicals.
