Grow Juicy Tomatoes: Add This Key Item to Soil Weekly

Gardeners can grow plump and juicy tomatoes by adding tomato feed to the soil weekly, according to gardening enthusiast and TikTok creator Ish. In a recent video for Cherry Lane Garden Centres, Ish outlined essential tasks for those nurturing tomato plants as the summer season winds down.

Why Tomato Feed Is Essential

As tomato plants begin to ripen, they become "quite thirsty and quite hungry," Ish said in the video. To support healthy growth, tomato feed should be worked into the soil on a weekly basis throughout the remaining summer months, alongside generous and consistent watering. Without this feed, Ish warned that the plants may "struggle."

Tomato feed contains vital nutrients, including potassium and phosphorus, which help fruits develop larger and more flavoursome. A capful mixed into four to five litres of water in a watering can is all that's required. Apply the mixture directly to the compost surrounding the base of the plant to enrich soil nutrients, ensuring a "good soak." Avoid applying it to the leaves.

Additional Care Tips

Tomato feed also encourages the plant to yield a higher quantity of tomatoes. Ish has previously noted that this feed can be used on other fruit and vegetable crops as well.

Proper watering is equally important. Gardeners should keep the soil fairly moist throughout the summer months but avoid letting it become completely parched. Soil that constantly alternates between waterlogged and bone-dry conditions puts the plant under significant strain, leading to reduced production. Any tomatoes that do develop under such conditions are liable to crack.
