John Parry, a 78-year-old grandfather from Pontypool, is walking 460 miles across Britain to raise money for four cancer charities, turning his personal health battles into a viral social media campaign. Known online as 'Welsh Grandad', John has captured the hearts of thousands on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.
From Accident to Advocacy
John's journey began after a serious fall from a ladder in 2024, which left him with a skull fracture, brain bleeds, a broken back, and other severe injuries. While being treated in hospital, doctors discovered he also had bladder cancer that had spread to his right kidney.
Instead of succumbing to despair, John decided to take action. He started documenting his experiences on social media, initially sharing a video from his car while waiting to pick up a grandchild. The response was overwhelming, leading him to create the account 'Welsh Grandad'.
Grandad's Great Walk
John's fundraising initiative, 'Grandad's Great Walk', aims to raise £75,000 for Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Farleigh Hospice in Essex, and St David's Hospice in Newport. As of the latest update, he has raised over £54,000.
The walk began on June 1, 2026, in Lowestoft and is scheduled to end on August 11 at St David's Head in Pembrokeshire. John chose the Via Beata pilgrimage route, a lesser-known path from east to west, which features hand-carved artworks every 10 miles.
Challenges and Triumphs
John has faced numerous challenges, including blisters, difficult terrain, and overgrown paths. He noted that some public rights of way in England are poorly maintained, forcing him to find alternative routes. Despite these obstacles, he remains determined, inspired by the people he is helping.
His journey has attracted support from strangers and celebrities alike, including Strictly Come Dancing's Lauren Oakley, who joined him for a section and even shared a waltz with him at a pub garden.
Looking Ahead
As the walk nears its end, John is already thinking about the future. He joked about walking the route again if a millionaire donated £100,000 to each charity. Regardless, he plans to continue fundraising, driven by a feeling that his mission is not yet complete.
John's story has inspired many, and he hopes to raise awareness about cancer and the importance of staying active and positive. His daily mantra, 'one day at a time, one step at a time', reflects his resilient spirit.
