A couple in Brazil is under investigation after dyeing a waterfall blue for a gender reveal party, potentially contaminating the water supply of a nearby drought-stricken town. The incident occurred at the Queima-Pé waterfall in Mato Grosso state, a popular tourist spot and primary water source for Tangará da Serra.
The couple posted a video on Instagram showing the waterfall turning electric blue to announce they were expecting a boy, with guests cheering and white balloon swans visible. The video was later deleted but had been widely shared. The Brazilian environment ministry (SEMA) is investigating what substances were used and whether environmental damage occurred.
Tangará da Serra has faced frequent water supply crises due to drought, making the potential pollution of the Queima Pé river particularly concerning. The waterfall, 6km from the town, is used for bathing, rappelling, and other tourist activities.
The video drew widespread criticism online, with many condemning the stunt. One commenter asked, 'What happened to cutting into a cake? Why does nature keep getting damaged because these people think they’re special?' Another wrote, 'Because who needs drinking water when you have “likes”?'
This is not the first time gender reveal parties have sparked controversy. In May last year, a similar event in the US ignited a wildfire, resulting in a $500 fine for the expectant parents.
