Gardening Expert: Best Plants to Sow in June for Beginners

Longer days and warmer weather often see people spending time in their garden. For many households, their gardens will already be heading into full bloom but it isn't too late to make some changes or even turn your hand to a new plant or two.

According to gardening experts, June is an ideal month for making some additions to your outdoor space and these can be stunning flowers, shady plants or even crops to add to your summer meal plate. The team at GardeningExpress has shared its top picks for what to plant this month.

They said: "Warmer soil and longer daylight hours make June a great month to start planting plants that love the warmer climate. Gardeners will also find that the higher temperatures mean plants establish and grow much quicker than they do when it’s colder."

Despite recent wet weather, planting can continue as normal since temperatures are still consistent, they explained.

Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress, said: "June is typically a time of year where the ground begins to warm up and we see our plants grow much faster. Although we have had some rainfall lately, the temperatures are still pretty consistent, which means gardeners will find they are able to plant most things.

"We’ve pulled together a list of our top picks to plant this month for those feeling unsure on what to do. Gardeners looking to grow some veg should consider carrots or cucumbers.

"These are both pretty beginner-friendly, they just need the right growing conditions and care. Other plants to grow include hebe, cosmos and marigolds."

What to Plant in June

Carrots

Chris said: "Carrot seeds can be sown in June in well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. You’ll want to place seedlings around 5cm apart so they have enough space to grow.

"If you’re growing carrots in a container make sure it has enough depth for the carrots to grow. A pot that is around 30cm deep is usually ideal."

Cucumbers

The expert said: "Cucumbers need warm weather, so wait until temperatures are consistently above 12°C. Once planted, water generously.

"You’ll also need support for cucumbers if growing vining varieties. This is a great option for those with smaller garden spaces as cucumbers take up little space on the ground."
