Gardeners' World podcast host Claire Vennis has advised gardeners to plant cabbages this month, promising a rewarding crop next spring. In the latest episode of the BBC Gardeners' World Magazine podcast, she explained the ideal conditions and techniques for successful planting.
Planting tips for cabbages
Vennis recommended choosing a weed-free patch that hasn't been recently dug over, as cabbages prefer firm soil. For acidic soil, she suggested liming in winter, but noted it's not critical if missed this year.
She emphasized spacing: at least 30cm between plants and 45-60cm between rows, though this varies by variety. Overcrowded plants can be harvested early as immature greens. She advised planting up to the first set of true leaves, firming well, and watering thoroughly to help establishment.
To protect against root fly, she recommended netting, which works effectively.
Lawn care during heatwaves
Meanwhile, lawn care experts at GreenThumb have addressed concerns about brown, dry lawns during hot weather. They explained that grass often goes dormant in extreme conditions and can recover once temperatures cool and rain returns.
They suggested raising the mower blade height to leave grass slightly longer in summer, as longer grass shades the soil, reduces evaporation, and protects roots from intense sunlight. Cutting too short can stress the lawn and increase scorching risk.
