With summer holidays underway, gardeners worry about plants drying out. Simon Akeroyd, a gardener and bestselling author, shared a cheap DIY trick on social media: repurposing an old compost bag as a slow-drip watering system.
How to make the DIY watering bag
Simon fills the compost bag to about a quarter capacity with water, then secures the top with string to prevent spills. Using a sharp object, he pierces a small hole at the bottom of the bag. If the bag is already leaking, this step is unnecessary.
Positioning the bag for best results
He moves plant containers into the shade before placing the bag inside. The bag releases water at a slow drip, keeping plants hydrated for up to several weeks. For multiple planters, repeat the process for each container.
Simon demonstrated that the compost in the pot remains perfectly moist upon return. He concluded, "Enjoy your holiday!"
