Fruit flies vanish from home with 2 everyday items on windowsill
Fruit flies vanish with 2 household items on windowsill

A cleaning expert has shared a simple method using two household items to keep fruit flies out of the home. Lynsey Crombie recommends using white vinegar and washing-up liquid, which many people already have in their cupboards.

How to make the trap

In an old jar, mix a splash of white vinegar with a few drops of washing-up liquid. Make a few small holes in the lid, then place the jar on a kitchen windowsill.

“The vinegar attracts the fruit flies, while the washing-up liquid breaks the surface tension so they become trapped,” Crombie explained. She advises putting the trap near a fruit bowl or food waste bin for the best results.

Other prevention tips

Along with using the trap, remove any overripe fruits or vegetables from the kitchen counter, as these attract fruit flies. Wipe down countertops, tables and cupboards to prevent sticky residue. Clean kitchen sinks regularly and discard rotting fruit. Empty the bin often, especially in warm weather, and check houseplants for eggs. Fruit flies can emerge from moist soil, so allowing soil to dry out between waterings is recommended.
