A bag of frozen chips in the freezer is a handy staple, and you can make them taste like your favourite takeaway's by adding one simple ingredient instead of salt. Nicola Roy shares her method for restaurant-quality chips at home.
The Key Ingredient
To jazz up frozen chips and make them much tastier, Roy adds one key ingredient after cooking: Kerala Chinese salt and pepper seasoning from B&M. This seasoning transforms boring, tasteless chips into bursting with flavour, avoiding the need for overpowering sauces.
How to Make the Tastiest Oven Chips
Roy uses an air fryer for the shortest cooking time and crunchiest results. She prefers Aldi skin-on fries for their quality and perfect crispiness in the air fryer. Cook the chips at 180C for 20 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Add extra minutes if needed for golden crispiness.
After cooking, transfer chips to a large stainless steel bowl. Add a tiny drizzle of olive oil to help seasoning stick, then about a teaspoon of salt and pepper seasoning per portion. Toss to coat evenly, serve, and enjoy.
Results
This method makes chips incredibly crunchy, bursting with flavours reminiscent of a Chinese takeaway. Roy highly recommends salt and pepper seasoning for anyone wanting to elevate their chips.
