Gardener's three-product method to level bumpy lawns

Gardening expert Michael Griffiths has shared a simple technique for levelling uneven lawns using just three common products. In a video on TikTok, he outlined a step-by-step process that requires topsoil, sand, and compost.

First, mow the lawn very short, around two to three centimetres, to improve visibility of low spots. Then combine the materials in a two-to-one mix: two parts topsoil, two parts sand, and one part compost. This mixture provides bulk, drainage, and nutrients to help grass flourish.

Apply the mix over the lawn or focus on low spots, then level it using the back of a rake or a lawn levelling rake. Walk over the area to tread it in and repeat where necessary. Finally, water gently to help the mix settle, and re-seed if needed.

Michael advised that this top-dressing technique smooths the surface while keeping grass growing through, avoiding the need to re-turf. B&Q recommends doing this in spring, after rain, with short grass and thatch removed.
