Epsom salts: the bathroom item to revive a yellow lawn

Epsom salts, a simple bathroom item, can help revive a yellow and patchy lawn, making grass thicker and dark green, according to gardening experts.

A lush, verdant lawn is the hallmark of a healthy garden, so when grass begins to turn yellow, it's an unmistakable indication that something's amiss. Yellow grass is more than just an eyesore — it's a lawn's way of signalling distress.

This discolouration can stem from numerous causes, from lack of nutrients to environmental pressures. Given that the UK has endured several heatwaves over recent months alongside hosepipe restrictions, the summer's scorching temperatures have taken their toll on lawns nationwide.

How to use Epsom salts on your lawn

For those determined to restore damaged turf this September, gardening experts at Hoffmans Lawn Care champion the benefits of Epsom salts.

They said: "Epsom salt is considered to be one of the most valuable organic fertilisers for lawns and gardens, with plenty of overall and specific benefits.

"When it comes to lawn care, Epsom Salt is your best friend: mix Epsom Salt with water (one cup per 100 square feet) and spray your lawn with the solution at least twice a month.

"The magnesium will help the seeds germinate faster in thick, green, upright and strong grass blades.

"If you spray the lawn with such a mixture after summer long, you will enjoy a better-looking turf that doesn't turn yellow again."

Signs of magnesium deficiency

Social media gardening expert @gardengrubbs, who shares science-backed lawn maintenance tips on Instagram, also advocates using Epsom salt for lawns.

They explained that if grass is displaying telltale signs of magnesium deficiency, such as "yellowing blades" despite regular watering and fertilising, it will certainly benefit from an Epsom salt treatment.

They explained: "Epsom salt helps grass mainly because it's a natural source of magnesium and sulphur, two essential nutrients for healthy plant growth."

Magnesium plays a vital role in chlorophyll production, which plants rely on for photosynthesis and nourishment. It enables grass to "stay green, lush, and resilient".

Sulphur boosts nutrient absorption and overall plant metabolism. It can "enhance the colour of your grass" and encourage more vigorous growth.
