Elderly Dog Abandoned with Heartbreaking Note from Homeless Owner

An elderly dog has been surrendered to an animal rescue centre in Florida alongside a deeply emotional note that reveals her owner's devastating circumstances, leaving shelter staff heartbroken and rallying to find her a new home.

Diva's Heartbreaking Surrender

Diva, a sweet-natured dog estimated to be around nine years old, was recently taken into the Polk County Bully Project in Florida, United States. This marked a sorrowful return for the canine, who had previously been adopted from the same rescue after spending significant time in kennels, even earning the title of Pet of the Month at SPCA Florida.

The Note That Told the Story

It was only when rescue staff untied Diva that they discovered a note pinned to her collar. The message provided a detailed account of her personality and needs, describing her as a "fat but happy" dog with hip issues upon waking. It highlighted her gentle nature, noting she is an amazing family dog that gets along with cats, dogs, children, women, and men, with zero aggression or barking.

The note elaborated on her skills, stating she knows commands like sit, lay down, roll over, and paw, and takes treats gently. It also mentioned a grain allergy requiring a Blue Buffalo grain-free diet and a tendency to choke on bully sticks. At the bottom, the heartbroken owner explained the tragic reason for surrendering Diva: "Dad is homeless and unable to provide stable accommodation that she deserves."

Shelter's Emotional Appeal

Staff at the rescue centre shared Diva's story on their Facebook page, hoping to generate interest in adoption or fostering. They wrote about the moment they found her placed gently in their safe space, expressing how it made their "heart drop" to realise someone had to make such an impossible choice.

They emphasised that the note "broke us. Not because she wasn't loved… but because she clearly was." The post continued, "But her person is now homeless - and loving her meant letting her go somewhere safe. Diva did nothing wrong. She lost her home, not her worth. She should not spend her senior years in a kennel wondering what happened."

Public Reaction and Call to Action

The Facebook post garnered significant attention, with users expressing sympathy and support. One commenter said, "Absolutely heartbreaking, but such an incredible thing you're doing." Another added, "This makes me cry for her and the owner! This economy is so tough right now." A third praised the concept of a safe drop-off place for dogs, noting it's better than finding them starving and scared elsewhere.

The rescue centre made a passionate plea: "Please - can anyone foster Diva? Or give her the forever home she deserves? Let's make sure the hardest day of her life leads to something better." They directed interested individuals to their Facebook page for more information on rehoming Diva or other dogs in their care.

This incident underscores the challenges faced by pet owners in difficult economic times and highlights the compassionate work of animal rescue organisations in providing safe havens for vulnerable animals.
