Opening windows in warm weather invites dust and pollen, which settle on blinds and window sills because the materials generate static electricity. A specialist has revealed a simple solution: tumble dryer sheets.
John Anderton from Stylux Blinds said: "Inexpensive tumble dryer sheets will make a good job of cleaning wooden, vinyl, or metal blinds. The dryer sheet will pick up the dust as you go, rather than redistributing it around the room, and remove static at the same time. This means that further dust isn't attracted back to the blind as quickly."
How dryer sheets work
Dryer sheets are formulated to eliminate static in laundry, and their anti-static qualities also prevent dust from settling on surfaces. They remove static buildup and leave a thin residue that acts as a protective barrier, stopping dust from sticking.
How to use them
Wipe down blinds and window sills with a dryer sheet. If the sheet becomes heavily laden with dust, replace it. For stubborn traces, use warm water and washing-up liquid. Finish with a new dryer sheet to apply the anti-static layer.
The coating typically repels dust for at least a week, and in some cases up to an entire month, depending on how often windows are opened.
