Don't Trash Egg Cartons: Gardener Reveals Genius Repurposing Hack
Don't Trash Egg Cartons: Gardener's Genius Repurposing Hack

A savvy gardener has shared a clever method to repurpose empty egg cartons, plastic bottles, and takeaway containers into valuable items for your home and garden. Instead of tossing these everyday items into the trash, you can give them a second life that benefits both your plants and the environment.

Everyday Waste Becomes Garden Gold

Every household generates weekly waste, including takeaway containers, plastic bottles, and egg cartons. But keen gardener Ish has revealed a smart way to reuse these items, especially for beginners. In a TikTok video, Ish explained: "Everyday items you normally throw away can easily be repurposed into useful items in the garden." He believes that "with a little bit of imagination" these items can be transformed into practical garden tools.

Plastic Bottle Mini Propagator

First, Ish demonstrated how a plastic bottle can serve as an excellent mini propagator. He recommends cutting it in half while keeping a small section attached. Then, fill it with compost, plant your seeds, and put the lid on top. This creates "a nice humid environment to get your seedlings started," Ish explained.

Egg Carton Individual Pots

Regarding egg cartons, Ish proposes using the bottom section as "individual pots" instead of discarding them. He pointed out that egg cartons "decompose very well in the soil." After planting seeds in them, you can cut them up and "put them directly in the ground without any root disturbance." The carton will then "start to break down," making it a "great way to start off your seeds" before transplanting them straight into the soil.

Salad Tray Seed Viability Checker

In his final demonstration, Ish revealed how to repurpose a supermarket salad tray or takeaway container. He noted these are "not deep enough to work as a propagator," so he uses them to check the "viability of any old or expired seeds." Ish begins by placing a "layer of kitchen roll" at the base of the tray, which he thoroughly soaks with water. Then he adds the "extra seeds that have expired" and covers them with another layer of paper towel. This setup creates a "moist and humid environment" that should "hopefully get these started." Ish explained he can subsequently "pick out which ones are doing okay and plant them up," thereby "not wasting any seeds that normally would've expired."

Viewers Embrace the Eco-Friendly Tips

Ish encouraged his viewers to repurpose these household items in their gardens rather than discarding them. In response to his video, one woman amusingly commented that her "kitchen looks like a recycling centre" as she had been following his advice and stockpiling items. Another viewer shared: "Ish, this is such good helpful information as I have a lot of old seeds, but I was going to throw them out. Now I'm going to try what you said. Thank you once again."
