Margate, a beagle cocker spaniel cross, has spent 1,036 days in kennels at Many Tears Animal Rescue and is still waiting for someone to offer him a forever home. He arrived at the Llanelli-based rescue in November 2023 after coming from a breeder.
Now approaching his third year at the rescue, he has watched other dogs find homes while he continues to wait for a loving owner. Staff say the five-year-old is a hugely intelligent and affectionate dog with a "massive personality", but he needs an experienced owner who understands his particular needs.
Margate's time in rescue
Margate has become a firm favourite with the people who care for him at Many Tears. He has several affectionate nicknames, including Best Boy, Maggie Moo, Margaret, and even Margherita Pizza. One member of staff describes herself as the founder of his fan club and says he has "so many adoring fans" at the rescue. His days are filled with long walks, time in the yard, sniffing everything he can, and seeing his favourite volunteers.
He has also received dental treatment and had a cyst removed from his back left leg during his stay. Despite having so many people who adore him, staff say what Margate really needs is a home of his own.
He's incredibly clever
Margate is described as "one of the smartest dogs we've ever worked with" and loves having his brain challenged. He has already learned how to sit, give his paw, and speak, picking up new tricks remarkably quickly when tasty treats are involved.
The rescue believes he could thrive with activities such as scent work or cani-cross, although he must remain on a lead because of his prey drive. He is also a lively and vocal character, particularly when he thinks it's time for breakfast. Staff say his excited barks can be heard all the way from the car park - but beneath his cheeky and bouncy exterior is a much more sensitive side. Margate can become anxious in overwhelming situations, including visits to the vet, where he needs extra support. He is muzzle-trained to help him cope in these situations.
He needs an experienced home
Margate isn't suitable for just any household. He needs an adult-only home with no resident or visiting children, as well as a secure garden where he can burn off some of his considerable energy.
The rescue says he would prefer to be the only dog and cannot live with cats or small furry pets. A calm female dog may potentially be considered, provided she does not challenge him around the things he guards. Margate can be possessive around food, toys, and bedding, so his new owners will need to understand resource guarding and be prepared to manage it appropriately. The rescue says his behaviour likely comes from insecurity and that adopters will be given guidance to help them set him up for success.
'He's the most super special boy'
Although Margate has his challenges, those who know him best believe he has an enormous amount to offer the right person. His supporters describe him as a loyal, affectionate and goofy companion who loves his walks and enjoys learning. They say he has made huge progress during his time at the rescue, gaining confidence and showing just how much potential he has.
One staff member said: "He is the most super special boy who has so many adoring fans, and I am the founder of that fan club." She added: "I know his right home is out there; he just needs to wait a bit longer."
