DIY 2-Ingredient Floor Cleaner That Repels Dust Effectively
DIY 2-Ingredient Floor Cleaner That Repels Dust

Keeping floors clean can be a time-consuming task, but a simple two-ingredient DIY mixture could make it easier. Flooring expert Richard McKay, managing director at Sprung, has shared a mopping technique that uses fabric conditioner to create an anti-static layer, helping floors repel dust and stay cleaner for longer.

How the DIY Mixture Works

According to McKay, adding one to two teaspoons of fabric conditioner to one litre of warm water creates an effective cleaning solution. Mop floors as usual with a microfibre mop, and the softener leaves a thin anti-static layer that repels dust, dirt, and hair. This means floors remain cleaner for longer, reducing the frequency of cleaning.

Why Fabric Conditioner Is Effective

Fabric conditioner contains cationic surfactants, which coat the surface and reduce static. Just as it prevents fluff from sticking to clothes, it also stops dust and debris from adhering to hard floors. McKay notes that this hack is particularly useful for homes with children and pets, where daily dirt accumulates quickly. Additionally, the floors will smell pleasant after cleaning.

Tips for Best Results

To avoid damaging floors, especially laminate, wood, or vinyl surfaces, McKay advises using a slightly damp mop rather than saturating them. He also recommends rotating rugs and furniture regularly to prevent pressure spots. For those seeking a natural alternative, a mixture of one teaspoon of white vinegar and a few drops of essential oil in water works similarly to repel dust, neutralise odours, and leave a fresh scent.
